Basics
Bit.hack is built in Visual Basic 6.0, therefore it was quite easy to make visual formulars and overlays. The main programming was a bit more difficult. But only for the menues, options and tools in the game. The most difficult part of it are the MissenEditor (called MisE) and the NET-System. I made .pak files were the missions are saved. Each mission has an own story and can be downloaded from the site (not done at all). I decided to make 1 main campaign with 10 different linked missions. The demo game has 5 missions of it. But now lets got to the main questions
What can I do in Bit.hack?
The game theme is hacking in an virtual, non-real internet. It simulates the internet with "real" websites and other stuff (like Proxy Servers, Gateways, ...). In the main mission you have to download files, decrypt them, upload them or get access to a security protected website. Each file you download can be opened and watched like in Windows. There are different file types like texttypes (.txt, .doc) or imagetypes (.gif, .jpg)! To buy books or software in the game you have a money accout with a start count of 0$. You can join a bank where your money is stored on your personal bank account. In order to get money you have to solve the missions. Later in the game, when you chose a political-directed group, your interface will change into a gateway. Then there will be many new features like a "real" HDD, Hardware (changeable) and a "real" operating system.
How does Bit.hack work?
I build my game in Visual Basic 6.0, which is a very useful program for making small applications. In order to use the AutoPatcher you have to be connected to the internet. All missions made with MisE can be integrated in the game and be played then.
What is the 'NET.System'?
This term is the name of my self-created server technology. With this system the program can easily connect to the Bit.hack public server and upload informations. These files and informations that are being uploaded contain ladder-, save- and patchdata that are required for the gameplay.
